Crown Equerry's DepartmentThe Crown Equerry, based in the Royal Mews, co-ordinates transport for The Queen and other members of the Royal family both by horse-drawn carriage on ceremonial occasions, and the more routine journeys by car.The Crown Equerry is responsible for the cars used by The Queen and other members of the Royal family; the oldest is a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV built in 1948. Carriages such as the Gold State Coach (dating from 1762 and used at coronations) are also among the Department's responsibilities (there is a carriage restoration workshop). The horses used by the Royal family on ceremonial occasions are stabled in the Mews. The Department's 50 staff include grooms, coachmen, carriage restorers and a master saddler, as well as chauffeurs. As the Royal Mews is a working establishment, the Crown Equerry and most of the staff live there. |
