Crown Equerry's Department

The Crown Equerry, based in the Royal Mews, co-ordinates transport for The Queen and other members of the Royal family both by horse-drawn carriage on ceremonial occasions, and the more routine journeys by car.

The Crown Equerry is responsible for the cars used by The Queen and other members of the Royal family; the oldest is a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV built in 1948. Carriages such as the Gold State Coach (dating from 1762 and used at coronations) are also among the Department's responsibilities (there is a carriage restoration workshop). The horses used by the Royal family on ceremonial occasions are stabled in the Mews.

The Department's 50 staff include grooms, coachmen, carriage restorers and a master saddler, as well as chauffeurs. As the Royal Mews is a working establishment, the Crown Equerry and most of the staff live there.
