When are flags flown on public buildings? This is decided by the Home Office. The Union Flag is flown on government buildings on days marking the birthdays of members of the Royal family, Commonwealth Day, Coronation Day, The Queen's official birthday, Remembrance Day and on the days of the State Opening and prorogation of Parliament; it is also flown on St David's Day (Wales), St George's Day (England), and St Andrew's Day (Scotland). The Royal Standard is flown when The Queen is in residence in one of the Royal Palaces or on board the Royal Yacht, on The Queen's car on official journeys and on aircraft (when on the ground). It may also be flown on any building, official or private (but not ecclesiastical buildings), during a visit by The Queen, if the owner or proprietor so requests. The Royal Standard is never flown at half mast. In Commonwealth countries, The Queen's personal flag (the initial E beneath a crown, encircled by a chaplet of roses) is used instead. |
