Frequently asked questions

Why does The Queen keep corgis?

The first royal corgi was bought in 1933 by King George VI - a Pembrokeshire corgi called Dookie. In 1938 the King acquired a second, Jane, and two of her puppies were kept in the family. They became great favourites and The Queen, who grew up with these dogs, has been firmly attached to the breed ever since.

For her eighteenth birthday, Princess Elizabeth was given a corgi bitch called Susan. The Queen's current corgis - Phoenix, Pharos, Kelpe and Swift - are directly descended from Susan. She also owns four 'dorgis' (mixed bred corgis and dachshunds) - Harris, Brandy, Cider and Berry.

The Queen looks after her own dogs as much as possible and they move from house to house with her, living in her private apartments.
