Background

Prince Edward is the third son and youngest child of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. He was born on 10 March 1964 and christened Edward Anthony Richard Louis at Buckingham Palace.

Education

Prince Edward was educated at Heatherdown Preparatory School and followed his father and brothers to Gordonstoun School in Scotland. At Jesus College, Cambridge, he studied history, graduating as a Bachelor of Arts in 1986.

Career

After spending three years as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, Prince Edward moved into theatre production through the Theatre Division and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Theatre Company.

In 1993, Prince Edward formed Ardent Productions Limited, a television production company, of which he is the Director of Production.

Activities and interests

Prince Edward's three great interests are young people, the arts and sport. Since 1986, when he achieved Gold in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, he has been closely involved with the work of the charity; as a United Kingdom and International Trustee of the Scheme, he travels widely in Britain and overseas. He is Patron of several theatrical and musical organisations, both amateur as well as professional, especially those supporting youth in the performing arts. These include the National Youth Music Theatre and the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester; the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

The Prince enjoys a number of sports such as horse riding, sailing, skiing, badminton and the unusual game of Royal or Real Tennis. The latter he took up while at University when he was forced to give up rugby through injury. His patronage of sporting organisations reflects these interests as well as his support for opportunities for the young. In early 1990 Prince Edward opened the Commonwealth Games in Auckland and was elected President of the Commonwealth Games Federation in succession to The Duke of Edinburgh. He also serves as Patron of the Ocean Youth Club and the Scottish Badminton Union.

Despite his business commitments, Prince Edward carried out 170 engagements in 1996 on behalf of The Queen and in support of organisations he is actively involved with.

Honours

In March 1989, The Queen appointed Prince Edward a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
