The Queen's Gallery Exhibitions 1997

Views of Windsor - Watercolours by Thomas and Paul Sandby: 9 May - 13 July The brothers Thomas and Paul Sandby were both important figures in the development of watercolour painting in England in the second half of the 18th century. While Paul has been described as the 'father of English watercolour', Thomas is best remembered as the first Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Masterpieces in Miniature - Portrait Miniatures from the 16th - 19th centuries: 23 July - 5 October Small but beautifully evocative, the portrait miniature has for centuries been variously used as a token of affection or as a powerful political tool and their very personal nature has made them popular with monarchs from Henry VIII to Queen Victoria. Spanning a historical period between the 16th and 19th centuries, the exhibition will include Lucas Hornbolte's rare miniature portrait of Henry VIII, François Clouet's poignant image of Mary, Queen of Scots' and Nicholas Hilliard's flattering portrait of Elizabeth I.

Presenting an Image - Photographs from the Royal Photograph Collection: 17 October - 4 January 1998 The exhibition features photographs given to members of the Royal family between 1858 and 1935. The exhibition comprises a significant selection from the Royal Photographic Collection which contains approximately 150,000 images. The Collection has been formed from the private collections of various members of the Royal family from the reign of Queen Victoria and includes more contemporary formal and press photographs, portraits and groups, topographical material, military views, snapshots taken by members of the Royal family and documentation of Royal ceremonies and visits.

Michelangelo and His Influence: 23 January - 5 April 1998 In his 75 years Michelangelo came to dominate the Florentine and then the Roman art worlds. He was perhaps the most powerful draughtsman in western art and the exhibition will feature 18 of his drawings and a further 50 by his contemporaries and followers including Raphael, Bronzino, Salviati and many others. The drawings were mostly purchased by George III and have been in the Royal Collection since at least the 18th century. Many of the drawings not by Michelangelo are being exhibited for the first time.
